Homemade Food to Order in Cairo, Uzbek, Kyrgyz and Russian Dishes
Everyday life4 min read

Missing proper plov or short of time before a celebration? Here is how ordering homemade food in Cairo works and how to start selling your own.
What people order most
Russian-speaking cooks in Cairo make dishes you will not find in Egyptian cafes. Orders come from students who miss home and from families setting a festive table.
- Plov, most often for big gatherings, cooked in a kazan for the number of guests you need.
- Manti, samsa and lagman with homemade noodles.
- Pelmeni and vareniki, handy to buy frozen and keep in stock.
- Beshbarmak, boorsok and other Kyrgyz dishes.
- Pirozhki, flatbreads and other baked goods.
- Birthday and holiday cakes made to order, also found under homemade sweets and pastries.
How ordering works
Most home cooks have a minimum order: manti and pelmeni are often sold by the dozen or by the kilo, and plov is cooked from a set number of portions. Ask about it in your first message.
Then agree on how you get the food. Some cooks deliver within their district or send orders with a courier, others offer pickup. Settle who pays for delivery and how you pay, cash on receipt or a transfer. For a large order a cook may ask for an advance to buy ingredients, which is normal, but keep the agreement in your chat.
Order early for holidays
Before Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, for iftar in Ramadan, at New Year and Navruz, cooks are busy. If you need plov for a big group or a cake, book a few days ahead, and earlier still for a major holiday. Give the date, time, number of guests and address right away so the cook can tell you honestly whether they can make it.
What to ask the cook
A good cook answers questions calmly. Ask for photos of dishes they actually made, not pictures from the internet, and check the essentials.
- Ingredients. Which meat is in the filling, whether there is tail fat, how much onion and spice, how hot it is.
- Halal. If it matters to you, ask where the meat is bought.
- Allergens. Nuts, eggs, milk, gluten, if any guest has an allergy.
- Freshness. Is it cooked on the day of delivery, how and how long to store it.
- Portions. Grams or pieces per portion and how many people the order feeds.
- Packaging. What it comes in and whether it can be reheated in the container.
Tips for home cooks who want to sell
Buyers choose with their eyes and dislike endless questions, so make your ad clear at a glance. If you plan to cook for sale regularly, find out what requirements apply in Egypt, since rules can change and official sources are the place to check.
- Photos. Shoot real dishes in daylight on a plain background and show a manti or samsa cut open.
- A clear price list. Price per portion, kilo or piece, the minimum order and delivery cost in one place.
- Delivery areas. Say where you deliver yourself, for example Nasr City, the 10th district, Rehab or Madinaty, and where only by courier.
- Lead times. How far ahead to order regular dishes and holiday ones.
- Labels. Write the cooking date on frozen food.
- Equipment. A kazan, a manti steamer and containers can be found under kitchen and cookware.
